Reusable bags will save the world

Do you often wonder what more you can do to make a difference in our fight for a sustainable planet? Well, our opinion is that there are two simple things you can do to make a big impact. First, try to live by the 6 Rs; second, show others you care. There are so many ways that these two world-changing goals can be accomplished, and if you have more ideas, please share them with us!

Our suggestion to help you achieve these goals: reusable bags! You might be thinking, “Wait, how can a reusable bag change the world?” It’s easy–by embodying the 6Rs and showing others you care!

The 6Rs encourage you to Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Redeem and Rebuy.  The reusable bag has the ability to help you accomplish all of these challenges.

First, by using a reusable bag, you are Refusing single-use bags; you’re Reducing the number of resources harvested from our planet; and of course, you’re Reusing it over and over again. Just like that, you are living the first 3 of the 6Rs.

The second half is a bit more complicated but can still be achieved! By using a reusable bag you’re allowing more items to be Recycled. How so? Well, did you know that the number one contaminant in the recycling process is plastic bags? Removing contaminants from the recycling bins means that the recycling gets processed as it should instead of being rejected for contamination.

Redeem is the easy one! Many of our local partners and national partners, as well as the EnviroPerks storefront, sell reusable bags with an exclusive discount for EnviroPerks members. So start using those points to help change the world!

And the last R, and maybe most important, is Rebuy. This step is one of the most important steps; without a market for recycled materials, companies have no incentive to use recycled materials. So help close the loop by demanding products made from recycled materials. Many reusable bags are made from recycled materials, but the potential is so much greater. S,o take advantage of our capitalistic economy where supply and demand drive product availability. Demand more products made from recycled material.

And finally, we promised that caring was a big step toward creating a better planet and that reusable bags are the answer as well. If you see someone in line without a bag, share one with them.  One of our team members experienced this while waiting in line to check out and it has stuck with her. One small gesture not only kept someone from using a single-use bag that day, but it showed that someone cared enough to give up a bag they had paid for in order to help out someone who now might see the value in using reusable bags. Our world doesn’t see enough good nowadays, and small gestures can go a long way to change that. It was a simple gesture that was heartwarming and inspiring.

So you see, reusable bags really can help save the world! And it’s a simple step we can all take despite our busy lives.
